Review: Within These Walls by J.L Berg- 5/5 stars

Within These Walls - J.L. Berg

Goodreads Synopsis :

Within these walls, he became my solace, my sanctuary and my strength.

I am not strong. I am just a survivor of circumstance.

Isn’t that what we all do? Survive?

Each of us has our own set of circumstances to muddle through. Mine are just more…complicated. Born with a severe heart defect, I’ve seen the inside of a hospital room more than my own bedroom.

I was drowning, a prisoner to the illness that owned me, until he appeared. He thinks he’s blocked out the world with his tattoos and hard exterior, but I see the real Jude, the one he so desperately wants to forget.

But is he the answer to my prayers or will he break my already damaged heart forever?

My name is Lailah Buchanan, and this is our story of hope, redemption and sacrificing it all for the one you love.

Wow that was an emotional ride I am seriously overwhelmed by this book yet it made me feel so amazing. I knew going into this book is going to be a really emotional , but I did not expect it to get me to cry from the very first chapter. Really connected to the story, it was so unique. Some of the way that is unique what that I never really read a book about a kid or young adult who had to live with this chronic disease most of their live. I found it super unique also because of the heart problem she goes through and you actually get to see what happens for people in real life.

I loved how Lailah keeps a list of things that she wants to do someday if she somehow survives thousands of things that she wanted to do but was never able to. Lailah honestly is one of my favorite characters I've read about in a long time. She loves to read, is super optimistic, naive but smart, able to accept anyone as they come, has a fun spirit and also has a forgiving heart. Then Jude is truly an amazing guy who he blames everything on himself and retreated into himself after his fiance died 3 years prior to the start of the story. He is so protective of Lailah that really makes you realize just how much a person need to another one. At first Jude is very reclusive and he is really broken ,but after he meets Lailah he is so kind, thoughtful, caring, smart, and starts feeling again.

I also love how they meet with Jude secretly coming in every night and leaving Leila little pudding cups for her to find in the morning after he first sees her eating one with her finger the day before. After he comes in a few times he starts to help her with this list that she wrote of all these things she wants to do someday that she's never been able to that I mentioned above. Together they start a friendship while Jude helps Layla complete her list. Through this friendship Layla and Jude start to become closer and help each other right there demons. This is a story of hope, redemption and sacrificing it all for the one you love. How far would you go? What would you do for the person who brought you back from the living dead? How far would you go to help the person you loved?

I highly recommend this book if you aren't afraid shedding a few tears. So I would not recommend reading this in public because of all the water works in this book. I am currently reading the sequel Beyond These Walls.
